loud and proud

Fri 04 Jan '08

Yeah, we admit that some days we need to be surgically detached from our teeny-weeny mp3 players but there is a little part of us that harks back to the days of broadcasting tunes from shoulder height via the magic of a ghetto blaster. Remember excess of the 80’s when everything from stereo equipment to shoulder pads was simply huge?

all this reminiscing has inspired us to take a journey back in time and hit the town in our best 80’s gear…

here’s how to get involved.

essential tunes for your mix-tape

  • wake me up before you go-go – wham!

to make your ghetto blaster

you will need…

  • an empty cereal box
  • wallpaper paste
  • water
  • ribbon for the handle
  • some bottle tops
  • silver paint
  • black marker pen
  • some thick black ribbon
  • newspaper
  • glue

the good bit…

  1. add water to the papier mache mix and stir until you have a smooth paste
  2. tear up strips of newspaper
  3. glue the bottle tops to the top of the box to create radio knobs and dials
  4. use the string to create two circles on the front of the box in order to make the speakers
  5. dip the newspaper strips into the papier mache mix and cover the cereal box. continue to do this until the box is completely covered
  6. when the box is dry you can start to paint it silver
  7. once the paint is dry use the black marker pen to colour in the speakers and the knobs and dials.
  8. attach the ribbon to each side of the box to create a strap
  9. finally put the ghetto blaster on your shoulder and pretend you’re Leroy Jackson!
